- I might well do that Fire Lyte - thanks! :D
On another note now I've got to the end of the podcast (it's taken me so long to catch up with things after only a month or two of dropping off the face of the Earth – lol) - Curses:
When Mojo and sparrow were saying about people not believing in curses - I was thinking about *cursing* - I don't believe in cursing. That's not to say that I don't believe in the ability to curse or that they exist or that people do curse. I just don't believe I should. I've always seen binding as not a curse though - I haven't done it but I think if some ones harming you binding to prevent that is not a *curse* exactly but more of a prevention. Curses I have always seen as an aggressive active thing rather than the protection of a binding - you can keep some one away from you by building a really high wall (binding) or you can throw rocks at them and stab them with spears (curse).
The rule of three thing... really interested to hear about Mojo's mind, body and soul theory - it's the first thing I've heard that rings true to me deep down. I've heard of the one finger pointing three fingers pointing back. And I'm intrigued with the casting on the earth plane but still having air, fire and water in play.
Hope this isn't too rambly.
Oh and Chieftains...... after your super advice about mediation I had a go with some sage and sandalwood incense – after Fey's request for experiences with deity for The Dark Side of Fey podcast I felt I had to share. Mojo and Sparrow – not only did you reawaken the pagan in me it looks like you may just have helped me have my first real experience with deity – I can't thank you enough! - Funny that you mention that. Take a look at the book "The Year of Living Biblically" by AJ Jacobs. He actually mentions, backing it up with research, that the ancient Jews were polytheistic, but that the commandment just states that their highest god Yahweh should be revered above the rest. Much in the same way that Zeus or Odin would be revered. Our modern day Christians have taken it to an extreme.
Fire Lyte
- Fire Lyte,
I would not teach someone how to perform curses. I would tell them that I think it is not beneficial in the long run and only explain more about my personal feelings if I was asked.
I voice strong opinions about this stuff in theoretical discussions, but I don't consider my self the morals police.
I might point them at some information, but honestly, my opinion is that curses aren't any different than any other magick, if you can control your mind and draw and send energy you can do it with any intent you wish.
It doesn't take special words or special tools to conjure up an effective curse. It is all done with your mind, use any props that help you concentrate on the intent. I think that most people that want to know how to curse someone are looking for a special spell or incantation that they can just read aloud and the words all by themselves have some secret power. Sorry, but that is not how magick works. Bibbity Bobbity BOO!
The request itself indicates a lack of knowledge.
Maybe if we point them at good information about magick in general, they can figure all this out for themselves, like the rest of us did.
Nothing should be taboo, perhaps discussions about responsible use of power are in order.
- My biggest comment/question, Celestite, wasn't about witches having fear of performing curses, but, rather, that when a new/inexperienced witch asks for information, we are very quick to shut them down. I'm sure your magic is used for beautiful, worldly goodness. I'm positive that you improve your life, and that of your loved one's, with positive spells and potions. However, if, say, your daughter, best friend, or close, pagan confidant were to ask how to perform a curse... Would you show him/her, or would you simply say, "No, you should never do that. Remember the 3-fold law. Let's find a way to work this out in a different manner." Leading to, possibly, them going off half-cocked, researching curses online, and, perhaps, doing worse damage to themselves and others than intended.
I'm just saying, like you hinted at, that curses should be in a witch's repertoire. We should know the intimate workings of them, and be prepared to use them - only when absolutely necessary! Also, we should train new witch's in their use. Along with the positive, beautiful magic we're all used to working. They're a necessary evil - to borrow a colloquialism - and should be treated with reverence and respect. If we make them a taboo, people are more likely to use them out of curiosity, and that could be tragic.
Fire Lyte - Hey Sparrow and Mojo,
Love the show, I am a regular listener. I just HAD to comment on the curses topic. I am just so sick of hearing that witches who don't use curses avoid them because they are afraid of them. BUNK!
My positive magick works very well, I am sure that if I wanted to I could make somebody's life just ******* miserable if I wanted to, especially if the curse was fueled by righteous anger.
Here is my take on this, for what it's worth. If I was a ceremonial magician and my magick was separate from my spiritual path I would work on all aspects of magick, including curses. I think I would have to in order to advance my knowledge.
But I am not a ceremonial magician, I am a witch and I am dedicated to the goddess. I use magick to improve my life, to learn and to become closer to the goddess. How is that goal served by giving in to anger and stoking up a good curse?
My magick is an important part of my spiritual path. I am not interested in using curses, but AFRAID??? Don't make me laugh.
rant over

- Had a thought this morning about the cursing. Some people spend many years learning martial arts - techniques that can physically harm another. But just because they learn it, that doesn't mean that they have to use it. In my opinion the same is true of curses - in order to have a full understanding of the power of your Craft you should learn all aspects; the knack is learning when it is appropriate to use them (or indeed deciding NOT to).
Love to you all

/|\ - Hi there Wigglians!
I'll say it now...I don't mind if Mojo is first in a greeting or if I am. Just as long as I am IN the greeting. It is so uber cool to get letters, notes, messages, and emails from everyone.
I really like the analogies that everyone is making.
Thanks for taking the time,
Sparrow - On the threefold law:
I heard one explanation for it that I tend to enjoy. It says that when we cast magic, we're casting it on the plane of Earth. However, there are 3 other planes/powers out there - Air, Fire, and Water. So when you send out magic, it goes to all 4 planes, but since it is only directed to one, the magic sent to the other three must return to you.
Clear as mud? Sorry. I heard that explanation a few years ago, and, since I tend to think the elements are a major part of practicing magic, it made the most sense to me.
Thanks, as always, Sparrow and Mojo! (Who cares about that silly alphabet!)
Fire Lyte - Great episode! Only comments:
Philosophy shouldn't be considered to be a bad thing - like shades of grey, it allows you to consider your beliefs (should you want to think deeply about what you believe in - how hard do you want to plant your flag). In Deo's case, it brought them to atheism - not everyone's beliefs will be strengthened (indeed, the comment of the Christian thinking about other belief systems isn't a wrong thing).
Also - the threefold etc - I was always taught the analogy if you point your finger at someone, you have 3 pointing back, but good comment. I don't believe that anything should be considered black or white, right or wrong as it's all perception and belief. If you feel something is wrong, then it is wrong - for you.
These shows are great - they allow me to think about what I believe and strengthen it.
Oh - and the music's great too! Big love to you both, and grateful thanks.

/|\ - Wonderful episode! It is nice to see that there are pagans nowadays who can see multiple sides of the same coin, as it were. Not all destruction is bad, and not all creation is good. If people want to build a new house in a spot where something else exists? You have to tear the old building down before you can build a new foundation.
Also, when you were talking about shields and curses vs. belief, it made me think of a saying recently given on Pagan Centered Podcast: "Just because you don't believe in the bus doesn't mean you can't be run over by it." Kinda like gravity, magnetism, or any other natural phenomenon that isn't visible--being unable to see it doesn't make it nonexistant, and it can still affect you.
Keep up the great shows! I love listening at work. Good luck on the move, Mojo! - This show was great! I never thought about performing curses in the way you described so eloquently, Sparrow. "If you cannot curse, you cannot heal." It really eased a disquieted part of my spirit and thinking on the matter. I appreciated the discussion on the subject, and I can't wait for the next show!
Don't wait so long!
